Medical Microbiology

Microbes are best known for making us sick, although they are increasingly recognized as playing vital roles in keeping us well (and even impacting our moods and emotions). Medical microbiology is the study of microbial interactions with the human body. Scientists in this focal area of microbiology study how viruses, bacteria, fungi, and multicellular parasites live on and in our bodies, and the mechanisms for their success, with the goal of combating disease, and learning how to manage our individual microbiomes for optimal health.
